Documents and Resources - Updated and Easier to Use

We know that understanding any of the LearnLive products, from Connect to Compliance, is an essential part of using our system, for you or any new users in your organization.

As we work to bring you enhanced LearnLive products, we haven’t ignored the importance of having clear tools at hand to work with the products today.

In that vein, we have revamped our support area, the Documents and Resources section in the Tools area of the LearnLive site. Take a peek and see how much easier it is to locate the documents and materials you need.

An overview of the changes you’ll discover include:

  • A consolidation of various materials into a single guide for admin and end users of each LearnLive product. These manuals now serve as comprehensive support resources for both our new and existing clients
  • Existing training videos are easily located.
  •  We are introducing Quick Reference Guides for certain system tasks, especially those related to our Connect delivery platform.  We will be adding to and updating these reference guides on an ongoing basis as our products evolve. You will always find the most current versions of these documents, and any additional ones we add, in the same location.

Combined with the constantly-updated Help tool available in Admin, you are able to take full advantage of our entire product line in a much more streamlined way.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Best Practices for Screen Share

We wanted to circle back around on screen sharing and provide our users with some best practice tips and recommendations for helping to achieve the most successful screen sharing experience. These tips will also positively impact the recorded audio and video of programs you conduct via LearnLive using our screen sharing program. Many of the best practices outlined below are true for any screen sharing product, and not necessarily unique to the LearnLive tool.

  • Always use a second laptop, which should be logged-in as a participant to preview how your screen share will look to your audience. This is the only way to get an accurate picture of what a participant is experiencing. This is a universal best practice when using any screen capture product and not unique to LearnLive.
  • Install Java 6 or later version.
  • If the presenter’s laptop does not have an integrated camera, an external camera will need to be hooked up to the computer and turned on (with the lens cap left on it). Our system has to recognize a camera device in order to record the visual portion of the screen sharing event/program. While most presenters have a camera installed on their laptop, a few may not (or a desktop computer is being used). In this case, the external camera hook-up is required.

Note: Do not select the VHMulticam option from the drop-down menu if it appears. This option has been removed from the LearnLive system, but for computers that had this driver installed, it may still be appearing as an option until the computer’s cache is cleared. Choosing the VHMulticam will now result in improper recording of the screen share event/program with no recovery of the proper recording possible.

  • Change screen resolution to 1024 x 768.
  • Be mindful of your bandwidth, making sure output is sufficient. Please see the Technical Details section below in this post.
  • Avoid media-heavy graphics during a screen sharing session, such as video. Capturing video requires enormous bandwidth and results in a choppy and delayed student experience. This is general to all screen capture products and not unique to LearnLive.
  • Re-size the screen share box to capture just what is needed. For example, is an entire Excel sheet needed for display, or just two lines?

Technical Details

  1. Java 6 or above is required
  2. Output: 5 FPS (frames per second)
  3. Maximum resolution: 1024 x 768
  4. Flash and bandwidth requirements:  Unchanged from those outlined in our standard Technical Requirements.

We hope you find these tips and recommendations useful. For a quick reference guide on using LearnLive’s screen sharing, please click here.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Have a great week everyone,

The LearnLive Team
